21st November 2006.
This is what I physically found out about an orphanage we may identify to donate to as Bwanji Family/Charity/Social (the last words are the proposed for us, Charity sounds good though!!!)

FLYING ANGELS CHRISTIAN MISSION COMMUNITY SCHOOL

Underlined above is the name of the School/Community orphanage I visited situated in N’gombe compound, deep into what is called “New N’gombe”. The man running it is a Pastor Sakala. I had a long chat with him and he took me around, and below is what I found out and saw.

The Community School was founded on four basic areas of interest being

1. Education
2. HIV/AIDS Sensitization
3. Life Skills &
4. Spiritual devotion

1. EDUCATION

• The school has 751 pupils in total from grades one to seven of which 250 are orphans
and they are not charged anything for the education they are getting.
• 501 children whose parents can afford to pay for them are divided into two main
categories.
(i) These pay a ZMK 15, 000.00 a month towards their education
(ii) These pay ZMK 7, 500.00 a month towards their education
• 15 of the orphaned children (both boys & girls) have nowhere to stay. As a result,
they were made borders at the same school. They have wooden beds but no
mattresses, blankets, nor bed sheets and their clothes and rooms are not that good
looking though recently plastered.
• The money paid by some children’s parents and relatives is used to buy meals for all
of them (specifically, they eat porridge for lunch)

2. HIV/AIDS

• They have a community support group for people living with HIV/AIDS.
Most of these are the parents to the children at the school.
• An Anti AIDS Club for pupils had been formed so as to sensitize them (pupils) and
the community at large.
• There are monthly health talks held with the community. Different kinds of people
from all walks of life are also invited to these meetings. At these meetings, people on
ARV are encouraged not to loose hope and discontinue taking the HIV/AIDS drugs.

3. LIFE SKILLS

• A centre for skills impartation (training) is what the community school/orphanage is
trying to put up as they do not have the resources to as at present.
• Once in three (3) months, skilled parents (e.g. carpenters, welders, craftsmen) are
invited to display their works to the children so as to encourage them (children) to
look forward to a very productive future.

4. SPIRITUAL

• Devotions are done everyday. Members of staff and community leaders are the
ones for this meeting, which coincidentally I found them holding it though I had to
disturb the Pastor and whisk him from the meeting.
• Every Friday, Children (pupils) are the ones that hold the devotion meeting.

This is all I have guys, so I leave it all up to you to decide what next to do. I however, went to one other orphanage/community school just within N’gombe compound. I must confess that the guys have got no info or idea about what they are running!!! I was busy canceling figures as I was taking notes, they got nothing on paper and I just ruled them out.

Anyone who wants to see the place, anytime I will always create time for our good cause!!!

Its touching to see so much humanity and compassion on this site. I really hope these ideas will materialize into tangible benefits to the less privileged people identified here. My 2 friends and I "adopted" a little orphanage in Garden compound when we got our first jobs after university. Decent jobs are hard to come by in Zed, so we used to joke that if God gave us nice jobs, we'd give our first salaries to the less privileged. The 3 of us managed to get quite decent jobs within months of each other and we decided to fulfill the pledge we had made and identified an orphanage to which we donated foodstuff. The orphanage looks after 1-5 year olds. Our first visit was very sobering becoz the kids seemed to be more interested in our presence than in the food we brought, I guess its typical of emotionally-starved kids. Anyway, the kids really touched our hearts and what started as a little show of gratitude ended up becoming a weekend preoccupation for us. The 3 of us have been supporting the orphanage every month for the last 5 years and we sponsored the oldest child into boarding school for Grade 8 this year, while the youngest ones are being home-schooled by a preschool teacher we are paying. With our support and facilitation, 2 more rooms have been added to the house and the orphanage has managed to take on 6 more kids. We approached an embassy for donations and they donated some bunk-beds and a washing machine! Last december we managed to convince a bank to sponsor a Christmas party for the kids. I know its sounds like such hard work but it really isn’t. It has usually taken us just a mere phone call to get others to chip in; you’ll be surprised how many Zambians out there are willing to help other but don’t know how to do it. It’s the most fulfilling pastime activity.

I’m extremely encouraged to see that there are other young people out there who want to make a difference in the lives of the less privileged. The catholic in me always reminds me that ‘whatsoever you do to the least of my brothers, that you do unto me”. Farmboy and mangalungu, please keep up that good spirit! I hope other will follow in your footsteps.

Wow!!! LollyM, that is so inspirational. You guys are doing a great job and may the good Lord bless you abundantly. We are trying as a team to do what we can to the fullest of our abilities. We have other people like admin who is the first one to contribute for the good cause financially, aka tasked with the mission statement, Telisha with letters to sponsors, fify with organising celebraties, JayJay with adverts, Kayambila with sousa & flyers, .......we are working as a team otherwise.

Thanks alot for this, hope we all do likewise.
